Koto Demonstration @ Narita Airport in Tokyo, JAPAN
Free koto a traditional Japanese music instrument demonstration @ NRT Airport recorded on 2/27/07… I’m not sure if non-Asians know this, but the core Japanese borrows heavily from the Chinese culture. As does the Koreans. However both Japanese and Koreans have their own unique ethnic “spins” and the cultures are now eolved to uniquely their own. Both are excellent in their own ways. But my point is, the core is very Chinese. 
So this Koto instrument is quite popular in Chinese culture. It is call Guzheng. According to wikipedia, these string instruments are aka “zither” defined in wiki as a musical string instrument mainly used in folk music. The first Zither existing is a Chinese Guqin found in a nobel tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng of 433 BC.

no, my grandma changed her last name and she never told us her real last name. I found out by my grandpa that that is where they were from, but nothing else. weird ha? I hope I can go and maybe if I show pictures of my grandma someone will recognize her and tell me where I can find more of my family. However one of my friends told me that she was probably running from something. so he said that showing a pic is probably not a good idea.

Are you from any of those places? Japan is definitely at the top of my list. Don’t know when that’ll happen though because I’m studying in France next spring semester, and that by itself will be sucking up all of my money :O

. Now, I am saving money to go to Peru this coming august. Wish me luck on the one since I am flat broke. I’ll get around to go to Japan probably next year after I go to spain. Japan is definately in my to go list. 
Hmm, well I guess it depends on what song you’re playing. Classical pieces are definitely a lot more difficult than more modern ones. The music isn’t written in Western notation, but it doesn’t take that long to get used to. Aww that’s awesome! The harp is a beautiful instrument.

I just wish the entire piece had been shown, it’s quite warm and tender.Beauuuutiful. ok, so I just wrote like a complete message and my computer didn’t send it. To answer your question, I don’t play Koto. I heard is really hard, right? I play the harp but not good enough since I bought it in Ireland last december during my vac. I am going to mexico so next week so I can’t budget a trip to japan right now. How did you like Japan?
Ah I see. If you mean learning how to play it then yes. We’ve studied some cultural and historical aspects of the koto, but mainly it’s an ensemble class where we play the instrument.
